Why does the word “liberal” in politics in other countries not mean the same thing?

Victimcrats :

In the United States the term “liberal” is generally synonymous with “socialist” or “communist”. But if you look at European, Asian, and South American countries the term liberal usually means “centre right” or just “centrist”. Why though? “Centre right” and “centrist” don’t match up with the term “liberal” found in the dictionary, plus these parties are usually described as the conservative parties of their countries.

I have two friends, one from Australia and one from Japan, who said that the conservative party in their country is the “liberal democrat party”.

What gives?

Because they don’t have a right wing as crazy as ours….

They re-write and redefine everything to fit their view point on issues.

The redefining of the word Liberal is a prime example.

Liberal in the US is the EXACT OPPOSITE of communist or socialist. A liberal is a person with progressive ideas, a communist couldn’t possibly be more distant from a progressive person.

As you describe the terms is how the far right uses them to scare their uninformed followers.

Liberal doesn’t mean socialist. Just because Rush Limpballs says so doesn’t mean it’s true

Liberal in the Middle East usually means someone aspiring to Western ideals, including free market and capitalism, as well as equal rights etc.

Conservative in the ME means sticking to tribal based (socialist type) rule of law with all actions being based on group need, individual freedom seen as a bad thing.

Interesting paradox.

the word ‘liberal’ is NOT synonymous with ’socialist’ or ‘communist.’ The people who say this are either liars, or they believe liars.

What’s going on is that the US, especially the government, has moved to the right. So what’s considered extremist right in civilized countries is considered slightly right-of-center here.

Civilized countries have been slowing moving left. So relative to each other, we’ve sped far right.

If you look at stances on issues, on the whole, the citizenry of the US is mostly liberal.
